Focus...or, at least, finish something.I'm in Louisville, Kentucky right now, enjoying a quiet morning of reflection. I drove up yesterday for a rare treat, dinner with my parents and both of my siblings and their families. With my family living in another state and one brother and his family in another country, a gathering of all of us happens, at best, twice a year. We laughed, teared up a bit, acted goofy, marveled at how the nieces and nephew have grown, talked about the passage of time, books we've read, movies we've seen, and, maybe, just maybe, beaver butts. (Have you heard the urban legend about secretions from beavers' rear ends being used in candies, etc. as strawberry and raspberry flavorings? Turns out it is NOT a myth! Ew.) Yes, my brothers, sisters-in-law, and I will talk about anything. I think it's great that we still can be loving, supportive, serious, and in the next moment plain silly. It's been an incredibly hectic few weeks at the day job, and I almost stayed home this weekend. I'm so glad I didn't.

With being stretched in so many directions, it's been hard for me to knit anything that requires much brain power. Seems my resistance is low, too, because THIS happened:

That's right, 2,000 yards of Dream in Color Smooshy with Cashmere. I'm thinking of belatedly joining the Find Your Fade fever. What do you think? Too much pink? Can there ever be too much pink?

But first, I AM GOING TO FOCUS! I am not allowing myself to dive into the cashmere loveliness until I finish a few things in my active UFO basket:

Making progress on the Crown Wools MKAL. I'm on Clue 10. This has been a fun knit with lots of interesting stitch patterns. I'm about middle of the pack of the knitters at my favorite LYS (Ewe & Company) who signed up for this. Not bad, considering my low powers of concentration right now.

I've also vowed to finish the Tegna before I find my fade. I'm knitting this in Ella Rae Lace Merino. I love love love everything about this yarn. I'd had my eye on it for a while but refused to buy it until...I was at the LYS and picked up a project the owner was working on. It was beautiful and felt luscious. When she told me it was another colorway of the Ella Rae I'd been eyeing...ca-ching! The yarn and the pattern went right home with me. I was making such good progress until something else caught my eye, sending this lovely into hibernation in the basket.

And then there are the sock. But do those really count as UFOs?

Plus, the one at the top is butt-ugly. So right now, I can't even.

Call them phases, chapters, segments, whatever you like. They can be painful, and they can be beautiful. Often, they are both.

About 10 days ago, we celebrated the beginning of my youngest daughter's adventure - moving away from home to finish college. She took her Gen. Ed. classes at a local community college (always fiscally responsible, that girl) and is finishing her degree at university, away from home, so she can get the whole "college experience". While moving away marks the beginning of her adulthood, it also marks the end of her childhood. That's painful for a mama, a mama who wants the best for her children, but also who misses them terribly. The transition was more painful than I had expected, and it's taken me a lot of tears and a lot of self-lecturing to get me over the hump. But I think I'm finally there. I haven't cried at all today - well, hardly at all.

So now what? What's next? I have a hectic and, sometimes, very stressful day job. I try to squeeze in trips to the Y and am dabbling in running, having just "run" my 8th 5K. Although I haven't blogged, recorded any new podcasts, or updated Ravelry in longer than I'd care to admit, I've been knitting like there's no tomorrow, spinning a little, and teaching, teaching, teaching - everything from beginner knitting and crochet to wet and dry felting. So, again...what's next?

Well, I've been told by a couple of my knitting students that I should do more video tutorials. I have 4 basic tutorials on YouTube for my beginner knitters so they have something to refer to when they get home from my class and suddenly can't remember one of the many skills they've just learned. I get it. When you're a beginner, remembering all the steps to a slip-knot, cast-on, knit stitch, purl stitch, and bind-off can be daunting until that muscle-memory kicks in. Then it's like riding a bike. Anyway, so I think I'll put up a few more videos.

What else? I'd like to teach more classes. I love love love teaching beginners. It makes me all giggly inside when I see that light bulb go off over someone's head, when it clicks, when they get it! I'd like to do some more felting classes. I led a workshop a couple of months ago at Ewe and Company where we made owls (my spirit animal - ha!) from Woolbuddy kits. That was loads of fun. I took a sock blank dyeing class at the Smoky Mountain Fiber Arts Festival in April, and I think I want to put together a class for that.

And, who knows? Maybe I'll resurrect the podcast. Once upon a time, I hosted a podcast that had a small following. It was mostly me just rambling about what I was working on, things I wanted to try, fiber events I'd gone to. I enjoyed doing it, but it became harder to keep up with and it faded away, and then my content got deleted from the hosting site (the horror!).

So, that's what's stirring around in my mind. We'll see where it leads. For now, I'll just post a couple of things I'm working on:

The Crown Wools Mystery KAL:

Yarn: Frabjous Fibers (I love their fiber and their name is fun to say) 12-color kit, custom-dyed for this KAL.
Photobomber: Henry, Sketchy, Jake, Kit (name depends on who you ask around here)

Vanilla socks:

Uneek Sock Yarn - I'm using Color 56.

I was a sucker for the packaging - a little box containing 2 balls of sock yarn that promise to make a matching pair! Who could resist that?

I call it "going dark" and it happens to me every year. Actually, darkness begins to fall on me right after Thanksgiving. I have recognized it as self-imposed stress over trying to meet everyone's expectations for the Christmas and New Year celebrations. This year, that, combined with a full-time job that just didn't slow down at all over the holidays, and I've just wanted to crawl into a cave and hibernate since New Year's Day.

BUT...I got to spend a long weekend with my best friend and her husband at Pensacola Beach last week, and this week we had record snowfall in the Nashville area (essentially closing down the city). I've had some quality down-time and finally feel rested. I even picked up the knitting needles and made some small projects.

1 hat for me (that's sand in Florida, not snow in Tennessee):

And, as soon as I (a) find my long cables for my interchangeable needles or (b) can make it to my favorite LYS, Ewe & Company, to buy the needles I need, I am going to cast on the Boxy. I've loved this pattern since I first laid eyes on it. I have some Cascade Heritage Handpaint sock yarn in shades of red that I think will be gorgeous in this.

I even brought Grazynka out of hibernation. Would you just look at all of that unspun fiber?

Today, I feel like a light has come on. My perspective has changed, and I'm ready to accomplish some things. First on the list - the mountain of laundry.

See you soon. I'll leave the light on.LeAnnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07382630383161381098noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-31458581.post-26739440139055697462015-08-12T22:20:00.000-05:002015-08-13T21:46:27.594-05:00Saving My SanityFor the 5th night in a row, I'm sitting here listening to the incessant barking of my neighbor's dog. She usually tunes up around 9:00 and keeps going until long after I go to bed. It wouldn't bother me so much if she did it in her own yard, but she's in my front yard, just beyond the reach of the front porch light. She's a sweet dog, in the daylight, but after dark, she turns into a hellhound who will NOT SHUT UP!

What to do? What to do? Maybe a little therapeutic sock-knitting is in order. I've been working on my second pair of Fruit Stripes Gum (pattern by Leah Oakley at Haus of Yarn in Nashville) socks in the Gumballs colorway by The Color Wheel yarn company. I came across this yarn at last year's Fiber in the Boro, a fall fiber festival in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. The Color Wheel had dyed colorway especially for Haus of Yarn to be used to make this pattern. I think the bright stripes are perfect for the diamond effect of the pattern. I'm really enjoying each color transition.
The first pair of these socks I made on smaller needles (maybe US 1.5's?) and they turned out pretty tight. These I'm making on US 3's and they're a little bigger than I'd like. The yarn is superwash but I think I'll try a hot water wash when I'm done to see if they shrink to a better it.
I hope to pick up the podcast again, but it will be awhile, so I thought I'd put up a blogpost.

While I've been away, I've been knitting and knitting and knitting! Here are a few things, as most never get around to being photographed and posted to Ravelry (although I am always on Facebook -- an addiction about as bad as my fiber addiction). Here are a few projects:

I decided to do a KAL, which I've only tried once before. This is the Maggie Fangmann's 2015 Afghan KAL. I really enjoyed January. I'm finding February quite a challenge. My cabling is so tight, I'm not sure it will block out. Might be reworking February, but I'm going to plow ahead for now.
Finally, having been iced-in for most of the last week, I did some deep stash-diving and surfaced with this Dragonfly Fibers Pixie in the Firecracker colorway that I had purchased at Stitches South three years ago. This year, so far, has been a year to branch out a bit and I've loving it. I'm still doing the things I love - a lot of reading and knitting. But I've tried a few new things too - podcasting, traveling, spinning, kayaking...

I've always loved learning new things, but I had worked myself into a rut. Learning stretches me and inspires me. I had forgotten that! I'm having so much fun.

Here's a snippet of some of the fibery fun I've had in the last month.

Another baby blanket is behind me. I gave it to the mom-to-be yesterday and she loved it. I did manage to take a couple of pictures before I snuck it into her office, but all I had was my ipod phone and, well...

In bunny news, the bunny now has a name thank to the Happy Camper listeners. Her name is Marshmallow and she is settling in nicely. She is still rooming with my 16-year-old who wants to litter box train her and keep her in the house...forever. Sorry kiddo. As soon as we get her a nice hutch and acclimated to the outdoors, out she goes.

Anyway, because she needed grooming and the temperatures were unbelievably high, I sheared Marshmallow last week. English Angoras can be plucked or clipped, so I clipped her - just need a pair of good sharp scissors to do this - and here is the usable fiber that resulted...from just one shearing...filled a shoebox!

Now, I highly recommend wearing an apron when working with an angora. I started out with in just my t-shirt and pj pants (yes, I wear them all day when I'm home) and I had fur all over me. When I said that I was going to have to buy an apron, my husband (who had been curiously watching me work with Marshmallow) disappeared into his garage). When he reappeared...

This is my old Le Clerc table top loom that my parents gave me for Christmas when I was 11. I had been fascinated by the weavers I saw at Shaker Village at Pleasant Hill when we visited earlier that year. So my dear parents gave me this loom and weaving lessons. So much fun! I toyed with it off an on as a kid and then the loom found its way to the attic where in languished for 20+ years. I brought it home a couple of years ago and my husband cleaned it up for me and tightened the frame. I tried it once and then put it away for another couple of years.

Well, it's back, warped in a beautiful yarn that I've had since Stitches South 2011, and I've begun again. I am loving it! It's perfect when I don't want to really think about anything or I want to sit and chat with one of my kids or just want to sit quietly and "be".

Announcing the Camp Happy Times KAL/CAL/SAL

Halos of Hope is conducting another campaign for the Camp Happy Times chemo kids' camp again this year. So I'm hosting a KAL/CAL/SAL in support of this campaign. Between June 1 and June 30, we’re making birthday themed hats for the kids.

I’ll draw for a few prizes on July 1. Post your projects on the Happy Camper Fibers Podcast Ravelry group thread. Each project counts as 1 entry, so please post them separately.

Get out those needles, hooks, sewing machines and let’s get some hats made for these kiddos!
Yes, I took the plunge into spinning. I tried this once last year with a drop spindle I bought with merchandise credit from working a booth at Stitches South. I made some lumpy, bumpy, ugly, rope-like substance that would never pass for yarn. Well...Purdy Thangz did a brief drop spindle demo last Saturday evening, and I was hooked. It helped that she was selling some beautiful stone whorl spindles and happened to have one in my favorite colors -- sunset colors. I simply HAD to have it. I bought that and some silk hankies and was back at the hotel with my traveling companion and newbie spinner, Donna, spinning away.

My second new love is a ball winder! I am so excited about this! My long-time knitting pal tnknitter (and my fiber guru), heard me say on my podcast that I still wound yarn on a nostepinne and how much I HATED winding yarn. She surprised me on knit night this week with a shiny new ball winder. I tried it out tonight and knocked out a hank of yarn in under a minute! So exciting!!!!!

TNknitter also gave me some fiber in sunset colors (again, my fav), that she bought me to teach me to spin. She just decided to go ahead and give it to me since I started spinning without her. THANK YOU!LeAnnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07382630383161381098noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-31458581.post-63168199772709091762012-04-01T21:24:00.003-05:002012-04-01T21:42:39.605-05:00Just Because They're Pretty...Looky at what I found at Goodwill:

It always make me a little sad to see something abandoned there that someone had put so much love and time into. I'm sure it's like this for everyone. With celebrating our 25th wedding anniversary (went to New Orleans for the first time -- must go back!), work, kids'schedules, unexpected family "adventures", and life in general, everything gets caught up in the whirlwind and becomes a big blur. I love January 1, because I force myself to slow down, look back on the previous months, and plan or just dream about the months ahead. My last post was January 1 and I am just now revisiting the goals I posted then to 1) remind myself of what they were and 2) to see how I've done so far. So, here's where I stand...

Spend much more time in 2012 at my two favorite LYS's knitting with new and old friends: Ewe & Company and Haus of Yarn

Gee, this has been a tough one! OK, not really.

Haus of Yarn - Sadly, I've only been able to spend a couple of sessions there so far. The shop is in Nashville, between work and home (40 minute drive), and I can only make it there on Thursday nights. The schedule has been a bit packed with 3 surgeries in the family already this year (2 that were unexpected), the doctors' appointments and travel that those brought, and working late to prepare for being off of work.

Ewe & Company - I am happy to say that I have been able to spend more time at my local-est (is that a word?) LYS. The shop is only 15 minutes from my house, so I am able to go on the weekends. I spent some time there on New Year's Eve. I attended my first PJ party last month and had great fun. I've been able to meet the Saturday breakfast group at our local coffee shop, Red Tree Coffee, a few times. And for my first post-op trip out of the house (yes, 1 of the unexpected surgeries was mine), my husband drove me in for Thursday night knitting group.

Return to Atlanta for Stitches South

My knitting friend and Stitches roomie from last year, Liana, decided to sit this one out this year. She's attended the event the last three years, so I understand. I had decided not to go, having so much on the calendar already, when another knitting friend, Donna, said that she'd like to go this year and asked if I was interested. It took me all of 10 seconds to say "YES!" and off I went to book the hotel.

Escape for at least 1 knitting retreat with my good friend TNknitter

We've been kicking around some ideas, but have not settled on anything yet. Been busy busy busy, knitting knitting knitting, scarves scarves scarves. I spent the last 3 months making tons of ruffle scarves out of Katia Triana and similar yarns (do you call that mesh stuff yarn?). It's time to make things for me me me!

So...here is the first FO of the new year (actually, I just finished blocking it today, but I'm still counting it as a 2012 project). It's the Belmondo Shawl in Universal Yarns Classic Shades colorway Tropics. The poor-quality ipod pics do not do this yarn justice, but it's the best I can do today:

Yesterday, I spent the afternoon at Ewe & Company enjoying good company, good food, good knitting and great yarn. Glenna made cookies and a great black-eyed pea soup (does it count if you eat those on New Year's Eve instead of New Year's Day). While we were visiting, the nicest older couple came into the shop asking if any coffee shops were open. They were driving down from Canada to visit friends in West Tennessee on their way to spend a month on the Mexican coast. They had tired of interstate driving and had ventured off onto one of the state highways. They wound their way around one of our hilly, curvy backroads and ended up in Kingston Springs, hoping for a nice coffee shop at which to rest for a bit. We have a great local cafe, but it was closed for New Year's Eve, so Glenna offered them a cup of her freshly made coffee. They sat and talked to us for a bit, and it turned out that the lady was a knitter (knew I liked her). Her husband was from Scottish descent and I could have listened to him talk all day long. After they finished their coffee, they went on their way. Funny how something as simple as a bit of small talk with folks just passing through can add such a bright spot to the day. I hope they have safe travels.

Back to knitting, while at E&C, I used some of my Christmas money to buy an alpaca blend for the Glitter Shawl, which is next on my list to cast on. Yesterday, I cast on the Lintilla out of some Poem Sock yarn that I also purchased at E&C several months ago. I love this stuff. The colors and texture look a bit like Noro, but with a much softer hand. I do need to get another project started and in the mail this week. My sis-in-law asked me for another pair of Susie's Reading Mitts for her sister. These are a fun knit and this pair will be my fourth.

I hope you all have a healthy and prosperous new year. As for me, in 2012 I hope to:

Spend much more time in 2012 at my two favorite LYS's knitting with new and old friends: Ewe & Company and Haus of Yarn

Return to Atlanta for Stitches South

Escape for at least 1 knitting retreat with my good friend TNknitter (been too long, Liana!)

Give weaving and spinning a fair chance

Do more fund-raising knitting - so much fun to knit with a purpose

Best wishes to all!
LeAnnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07382630383161381098noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-31458581.post-35919478774206330762011-08-09T12:43:00.014-05:002011-08-09T13:21:43.122-05:00Living SphericallyOne of my favorite movies happened to be on a week or so ago, Under the Tuscan Sun. I hadn't seen it in a long time, so I watched for a few minutes. One of the characters was relating some advice that she had been given as a young girl:

"Live spherically...in many directions." ~Katherine, Under the Tuscan Sun

I've always been one that is interested in everything. In other words, I'm a dabbler. I always thought that was a bad thing and have tried (unsuccessfully) to supress this trait.

Now I understand that I've been "living spherically". That sounds so much nicer, doesn't it?

Was it worth it? Most definitely! Would I go again? Well, just check the updated countdown at the top of my blog. hehehe

After spending 4 days and going $100 over-budget, I would like to introduce you to my latest stash enhancements (notice the unintended pink theme):

I bought 2 keyrings and a pair of earrings from Sassafras Creations -- made from recycled knitting needles. There are 6 balls of Ironstone Sky from Fiesta Yarns. I actually bought 8 and immediately knit the pink ones into my version of the Baktus -- and wore it to the Market the next day:

The big ball of Muppet fur was purchased, along with the matching HUGE hank of rayon, after some excellent salesmanship on the part of the vendor and a bit of coercion by TNKnitter. It reminds me a bit of Animal.

I also purchased 3 hanks of Mica from Berroco, 2 hand-dyed hanks of sport weight from Creatively Dyed and 4 hanks of gorgeous art yarn from Jazz Turtle Creations - one of which I promptly whipped up into another scarf before we made the return trip home and another I turned into a belt when I got home Sunday evening (as if I hadn't had enough of knitting by then - NEVER gonna happen).

The PJ party in the lobby of the hotel was a hoot. The Gwen Bortner class I took was great. Dinner each evening at ToscaBlu in the hotel with TNKnitter and 2 new friends from Colorado was wonderful.

Despite 2 tornado warnings while we were there, it was all-in-all a terrific trip. I'm saving my pennies for the next one.LeAnnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07382630383161381098noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-31458581.post-49967398753438801712011-03-27T08:01:00.018-05:002011-03-27T09:33:23.414-05:00Hope Springs Eternal

In defiance of the winter-like temperatures this week (30s/40s) here in Middle Tennessee, I am determined to remain hopeful and continue to look forward to warmer temps. Never mind that the maple tree I can see through my window is shivering in the arctic breeze. Ignore that we've had to turn on the heat in the house...again. Notice not the donning of turtlenecks and sweaters as we leave for church this morning. The calendar does not lie...it is spring!

See! Nashville and the surrounding areas had a snow "event" this afternoon. My husband called me at work around 3:00 to tell me things were getting pretty bad at our house, which is 30 miles west of downtown. At 3:30 I was on the road home. I knew it was going to be slow going when the interstate was snow-covered. I did NOT know that it would take me 2 hours to get to my exit and another hour to travel the 10 miles home.

A couple of roads were closed and I had to leave my car about 4 miles from the house. I bundled up, filled up a bag with all the stuff in my car that I might need, and started walking. A little way down the road, a nice man in a 4-wheel drive pickup stopped and asked if he could give me a lift. He was on his way to get his wife and then on to rescue a buddy. I hopped in and asked if he could give me a ride just to the top of THE HILL. I've lived here for 20 years now and I know when THE HILL is passable and when it is not. THE HILL has claimed many victims over hte years and it is not to be toyed with. My Good Samaritan didn't want me to walk from the top of THE HILL so he insisted that he was going to take me all the way home. He also told me he was gonna teach me how to drive down a slippery hill. (insert smirk here -- He obviously doesn't know THE HILL like I do) I asked him several times to just let me out at the top. I told him that I would feel just awful if he got stuck when he still needed to go get his wife and friend. My protests went unheeded...

I'll just say that, once he stopped sliding sideways down THE HILL, got turned back around, avoided sliding into another truck already claimed by THE HILL and was able to slip and slide back up THE HILL (with much praying done on my part), he was more than happy to let me out at the top of THE HILL and bid me farewell.

While I appreciate chivalry, I appreciate good sense even more.LeAnnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07382630383161381098noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-31458581.post-69730689646159125752011-01-30T09:03:00.006-06:002011-01-30T09:15:54.604-06:00Time to Relocate?

I just discovered that I live in the Bermuda Triangle. The Bermuda Triangle of Productivity, that is. This picture came my way via Robin's blogpost @ The Knittin Coop who found it on Juniper Moon's blog.

The Triangle in which I live is encompassed by Facebook, Ravelry, and (dare I say it?) knitting. I'm thinking it might be time to relocate. But I won't move too far away. Maybe just a bit outside the Triangle's boundary lines.

What's makes up your triangle?LeAnnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07382630383161381098noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-31458581.post-39123250172259337582011-01-30T00:39:00.005-06:002011-01-30T00:50:10.902-06:00Don't Get Your Mobius All in a Twist

Well, it's OK if it's just a half twist. Today was my foray into the mysterious world of the mobius. Using the Easy Mobius Cowl and Cat Bordhi's mobius cast-on video, I ventured forth. It's quite a technique and one I have yet to wrap my head around. Perhaps my head will never wrap around this, for I wound up with two twists in my mobius, instead of one. Or maybe I have happened upon a new creature? A mutation of the famed Mobius -- the Mo-Mobius?

Maybe not.LeAnnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07382630383161381098noreply@blogger.com2
